2011 Shannons HQ Nationals Fundraiser
With the 2011 HQ Nationals coming up on the August 19th/20th weekend, the South Australian boys are madly trying to get some travel money together.
To this end a “Pre Clipsal 500 Motorsport Night” was held at the Sporting Car Club clubrooms on the Wednesday night prior to the event. The format included a BBQ tea, raffle and a couple of special guest drivers who were interviewed.
It was terrific to parallel the careers of two South Australians, Nick Percat, on the rise, and Mark Poole now retired. The two had not previously met, and we were amazed to hear the similarities of their experiences as they tracked successfully through Formula Ford and into V8s.
The anecdotes in regard to competing in FF in the UK were particular revealing and the level of competition was certainly not for the faint hearted.
We thank them for their time and will watch Nick’s progress through the year. He has certainly started well taking the points lead in Fujitsu after Round 1.
Graham Boulter.
HQ RACING SECTION
It’s easy to drive a fast car quickly – driving a near standard HQ Kingswood, complete with 3.3 litre six and 3 speed manual, now that’s a challenge! The concept of racing HQ Holdens was “invented” in Tasmania and introduced to mainland Australia by the Sporting Car Club, who promoted the first race at Mallala in 1989.
This category has re-defined the term “close racing”, with racers diving 3 abreast into corners with amazing regularity. The best part for would-be racers is that – in relative terms at least – racing a HQ Holden is an inexpensive way to enter into competitive motor sport. After the initial purchase of the car, strict regulations ensure that maintenance and modification costs are kept to a minimum.
With everyone using the same cars, there’s no shortage of advice for newcomers from experienced racers on how to tune cars and improve lap times (although not too much!).
