Classic Section pays homage to the late Noel Roscrow
Noel and Ali Roscrow have been keen to share their hospitality with the club, but particurlarly the classic section for quite some time and we talked about a visit over several months at committee level. Finally we decided on a date to make a visit and timed it to meet the Fleurieu Section at the Roscrow's home or should I say ranch!
No sooner than the plans were in place and details published, we were quite shocked to learn of Noel's passing. This news made us reflect on our lack of haste as we knew Noel had not been very well recently. However the news made a huge impact on our venue and the possible date. However, dear Ali was not going to let the chance go by and insisted we still come "as that is what Noel would have wanted". So come we did and what a fabulous day it turned out to be.
The hospitality shown to all club members who would have totalled over 60 people, was not only very warm but extremely brave of both Ali, but their son Ken. Together with members from the Fleurieu Section and close family friends, we were able to celebrate the amazing life of Noel Roscrow and share in a wake that he would have loved.
Apart from the beautiful surroundings at Hindmarsh Island, we were treated to viewing his home and amazing collection of "toys" including Bentleys, Rolls Royces, tractors, stationary engines and enough bits and pieces of automotive history to start a large museum. Several engines were nicely started and chugging away in the shed for our benefit. I guess the most impressive toy was the gorgeous SS100 Jaguar parked inside the house beside the billard table.
If you didn't join us on this day, you missed an amazing event and part of an amazing man's life.
Our sincere and heartfelt thanks and sympathies go out to Ali, Ken and family for their loss, we will miss him as a great club member and car lover too. I was so proud of our new club president to be there too and announce that a new trophy will be created to remember the life and contribution that Noel has made to the Sporting Car Club. Members in the future will be honoured to hold such a trophy.
